Fela Kuti – Sorrow Tears and Blood (Edit)

It’s more than a week after the Lekki Massacre (20-210-20, the killings of quiet Nigerian youths/protests at the Lekki Toll Gate) and to consume our candles for falling saints, enthusiastic Nigerians that we delivered this Fela show-stopper, ‘Sorrow Tears and Blood,’ which contains a wonderful message about the sad incident.

Regularly thought to be resurrected by the February 1977 armed force attack on the Republic of Kalakuta, as sleeve fashioner Ghariokwu Lemi said, “Sorrow Tears And Blood” was written in the light of the destructive South African regime of the Soweto uprising of June 1976, which Lemi and Fela had seen unfurl fully on TV.

The set was among the first of those delivered by Fela after the decimation of the Republic of Kalakuta. The early sleeve configuration used a picture of Fela in front of the crowd with the impact of the shock, his left leg still in mortar. He dedicated the set “to the memory of the individuals who were beaten, attacked, tormented, or hurt” during the Kalakuta attack. The police and the armed forces are continually deserting them “sorrow, tears, and blood,” Fela sings, and the support performers respond, “dem ordinary brand name.” Decca would not deliver the collection, dreading the government’s response. Fela responded by setting up the Kalakuta Precedents and making the circle the discharge of the Introduction Label.
