The 37-year-old fraudulent medical practitioner, suspected of forging certifications, was taken into custody by the Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan, Lagos.
While presenting the suspect to reporters in Lagos on Tuesday, Olatoye Durosinmi, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of the zone, confirmed the arrest.
The suspect, who claimed to be the managing director of the Skylink Medical Center in Ikorodu, was taken into custody by Zonal Anti-Piracy Unit agents, according to Durosinmi.
“Based on the intelligence gathered by the command through members of the Elepe community concerning the activities of the suspect, a team of detectives, led by SP Mariam Ogunmolasuyi, swung into action,” he said.
“The officers arrested the suspect, searched, and recovered two suspected forged certificates of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State and Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
“Also recovered were immovable hospital equipment,” he said, adding that the hospital complex had been sealed, pending the outcome of the investigation.
As he didn’t receive a degree from the institution or an MDCN certificate, according to Durosinmi, the suspect admitted to producing the certificates electronically.
He claims that the only qualification held by the suspect is a West African School Certificate (WASC).
Two of the members were professional nurses, while the other four were amateurs, according to the police chief, who also added that the suspect confessed to having six members in all.
“According to him, he worked as a Nursing Assistant at Fabo Medical Centre in the Majidun area of Lagos before establishing his hospital,” he said.
According to the AIG, during his three years of practicing illegal medicine, the suspect claimed to have successfully performed three surgeries: two cesarean sections and one appendicitis.
He claimed that the results of the investigation thus far showed that the subject had been running the facility without a license to practice medicine.
When the public suspects any illegal activity, Durosinmi advises them to report it to the police without holding back.
To purge the area of such criminal elements, he added, the command was collaborating with the health ministries in Ogun State and Lagos.
The suspect admitted to reporters on the sidelines of the parade that he performed routine medical procedures and surgeries, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Before opening his hospital, he claimed to have learned the position from someone for 2.5 years.
“I am just a secondary school certificate holder but I forged the MBBS certificate,” the suspect said.
