Multi-talented singer, Shugar Vanilla dropped her much-anticipated dope single entitled “Spirit De Fela Vibes“.
In addition, We chatted with Marnell Kenan, better known by her stage name Shugar Vanilla, about her new hit track, “Spirit of Fela’s Vibe,” and she had this to say about it. We prefer to refer to it as Fela’s Vibe for short.
At first, I had no idea what Fela was all about. When I first came to Nigeria two months ago, all I wanted to do was talk about the struggle of my ancestors and the surrounding conditions of a country and continent that I had heard about in America for many years as having it tough.
However, it was both a lovely location and an eye-opening experience. In music, I was expressing my feelings of observing 3rd world living conditions, injustice, disproportional economics, hunger, and political instability firsthand.
Also, People began to mention that they sensed FELA Speaking over the winds of time as I got into the groove of the song. This song took on a life of its own and was formed as a result. It was really natural.
The mood of Fela Kuti comes through loud and clear. Marnell began to study Fela Kuti’s music and messages, and she realized that this is what she needed to say in her song.
Moreover, She was able to create the song with a professional writer, Mr Nunso, and convert it into a catchy melody that suited the song produced by EXPERT COMPOSER ‘Elder Maxwell’ with the aid of a Pidgin (Nigerian language of broken English) coach.
The melody of “Da Dee Ah” is the primary section that people tend to remember and can sing along with.
Finally, For me, as FELA’s Spirit comes through – I feel a message in the melody that says~My people are not content or free yet but the melody Is free. Freeing to the Mind.
